The main goal of the EU-funded SUNSHINE project is to develop safe and sustainable-by-design strategies for multi-component nanomaterials, including those with high aspect ratio nanoparticles – nanoparticles with a length many times that of their width. To this end, the project will generate essential knowledge, tools and data on nanomaterial exposure, hazard and functionality characteristics. To facilitate the uptake and utilisation of sustainable nanomaterial design strategies by the industry, and especially SMEs, the project will deliver them as part of a user-friendly e-infrastructure. This should facilitate collaboration and information exchange between actors along the entire nanotechnology supply chain and enable a risk-benefit analysis at each stage of the innovation process to ensure that they are safe for humans and the environment.
